Chery Expands Israeli Market Presence with New iCAR Brand
Smolot, an Israeli vehicle importer, has secured the franchise to market Chery's new iCAR (iCAUR) brand in Israel, with the first model, the V27, expected by year-end. Smolot's existing European franchise for Chery makes this expansion unsurprising. Regulatory hurdles, specifically from the Ministry of Transport and the Competition Authority, are currently preventing major Israeli car importers from obtaining franchises for numerous Chinese car manufacturers. This situation leaves manufacturers with "orphan" franchises, which they are then compelled to assign to importers that do not currently hold significant market shares, such as Smolot.
The Chery group is aggressively targeting the Israeli market, with Allon Motors distributing Omoda and Jaecoo, and Crasco distributing Chery and Lepus. Chery plans to introduce two more brands, Jetour and Freelander, to Israel. Notably, iCAR vehicles bear a strong resemblance to Land Rover models, while Jaecoo's design appears inspired by Range Rover.
Smolot describes the upcoming V27 as a "BOX category" vehicle with "off-road capabilities," blending design, presence, independence, technology, and lifestyle. This marketing mirrors the language used for other Chery-affiliated brands, which emphasize user experience, quality of life, comfort, and innovation, or advanced driving experiences with plug-in hybrid technology. However, the article suggests that despite external differences, these Chery brands offer largely similar practical features and platforms, raising questions about the market's ability to absorb yet another similar offering.
The article also highlights challenges within the Israeli automotive sector, particularly concerning the service and maintenance of Chinese vehicles, especially plug-in hybrids. Leasing companies have reported difficulties with repairs at their own garages due to the technological complexity and frequent issues with these cars. This service gap could impact both fleet sales, a significant portion of Chery's business in Israel, and private customers. Smolot, which also imports brands like Fiat, Hongqi, and Jeep, faces the challenge of managing a diverse portfolio and ensuring adequate technical expertise across different vehicle origins, including Japanese, Chinese, Italian, and American models.
Furthermore, Smolot must navigate the complexities of managing multiple brands from a single, increasingly dominant manufacturer in Israel. The industry faces issues of "managerial resource allocation," questioning how many brands an organization can effectively handle without cannibalizing sales or compromising operational efficiency. Smolot's existing extensive portfolio, including brands like Subaru, Ferrari, and Jeep, means the addition of iCAR requires careful resource management to avoid internal competition and maintain service quality.
