Nearly 1,400 Israeli Doctors Left Country in Three Years
Approximately 1,370 doctors have left Israel for at least one year between 2023 and 2025, according to a study by Tel Aviv University researchers. The study, which analyzed data from the Central Bureau of Statistics, population registries, and medical licensing information, found that the number of physicians departing for extended periods has nearly doubled compared to the previous decade.
In 2023, 416 doctors left Israel, followed by 530 in 2024. The preliminary estimate for 2025 is around 419 specialists. This increase in departures has been observed across all major medical fields, including pediatrics, ophthalmology, and dermatology, and in all regions of the country.
The number of doctors leaving is comparable to the staff of a large hospital, according to Ynet. Researchers noted that a year abroad does not necessarily signify permanent emigration, but temporary departures often lead to permanent relocation.
Professor Itai Ater stated, "Israel is losing its top specialists." He warned that the departure of nearly 1,400 doctors directly contributes to longer waiting times, reduced medical care efficiency, and a significant decline in quality of life.
