Border Police Sergeant Killed by Officers in Netanya Shooting Incident

The man fatally shot by police in Netanya on Thursday was identified as 20-year-old Border Police Sergeant David-Javier Amrani. Amrani, who had been serving in the Border Police since August 2024 and had one year remaining before his discharge, was assigned to the Hebron detachment of the "Magav" unit. Eight months prior to the incident, he was transferred to the "Lamed Tet" company, responsible for maintaining order in Judea and Samaria. The circumstances leading to Amrani opening fire on a Netanya street and subsequently shooting at responding police officers remain unclear. Police arrived at the scene following reports of gunfire and, perceiving an immediate threat, opened fire, initially suspecting a terrorist attack. Residents in the vicinity also believed it to be an attack upon witnessing a person in civilian clothing firing a rifle indiscriminately. While initial police investigations considered possibilities such as concussion or PTSD, the current assessment suggests these are not the primary factors. Social media posts, citing Amrani's relatives, indicated he was experiencing "frustration due to service in the territories," but the true motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.
