Security Officer Shot Dead by Police After Firing at Officers in Netanya

An unusual shooting incident occurred Saturday evening in the Kiryat HaSharon neighborhood of Netanya, when an armed security forces member, carrying an M16 rifle, opened fire on a police force present in the area. Police officers and combatants returned fire, neutralizing the assailant. Initially reported in critical condition, his death was later confirmed. No other officers or civilians were harmed in the incident. According to reports from officers at the scene, the suspect aimed his weapon at them, and due to the immediate danger, they fired back. Prior to the shooting, he had been observed in the area carrying a long rifle. Large forces from the Central District were dispatched to the scene and operated in and around the area. Central District Commander, Superintendent Amir Cohen, also arrived at the scene and conducted a situation assessment. Netanya Station Commander, Superintendent Kobi Abutbul, stated at the scene that the incident had concluded and that the police were still in the early stages of investigating its circumstances. The motive behind the man's actions and his firing at the officers is currently under investigation. Initial assessments are exploring the possibility that the individual was dealing with psychological issues stemming from his service in the security forces. However, no official confirmation regarding his mental state or its connection to the shooting has been provided at this time. Following the incident, the Chairman of the Organization of Disabled IDF Veterans, Adv. Idan Calman, addressed the case, calling for a comprehensive review of the circumstances. Calman stated that the difficult incident requires a full and in-depth investigation and should serve as another wake-up call for Israel regarding the treatment of soldiers facing psychological consequences after their service. He added that the state is obligated to provide a supportive and accompanying therapeutic framework for soldiers in need and called on National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir to initiate a joint investigation with the IDF and the Ministry of Defense to examine the circumstances and the support provided to the individual prior to the event.
