US Ambassador Visits Palestinian Town Amid Settler Threats

U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckaby visited the Palestinian town of Turmus Ayya, near Ramallah, on Saturday, September 5, amidst escalating violence by radical Jewish settlers and direct threats against him. The town's mayor stated that approximately 80% of its residents, numbering around 3,000, are U.S. citizens. During his visit, Ambassador Huckaby called for accountability for settlers involved in violence, while emphasizing that they represent a minority within the Jewish population of Judea and Samaria. "Our message is clear: a crime is a crime, an act of terror is an act of terror. Those who commit them should expect serious consequences," he stated. A resident of Turmus Ayya, Samir Hamza, who attended the meeting with the ambassador, expressed hope that "the ambassador will do something for us regarding the settlers who violate the law." This past week, settlers sent threatening messages directly to Huckaby. A message reading "Huckaby - greetings from terrorists" was found on a mosque in the village of Bazaria, near Nablus. This was seen as a clear reference to Huckaby's strong condemnation of a recent settler blockade around Palestinian homes in the nearby village of Kusra. Huckaby had previously described the actions of the Jewish rioters as a "disgusting act of terror" and "Israeli terrorists." Police and the Shin Bet are investigating the riots in Kusra, which occurred late last week. During those events, dozens of Israelis entered the village, barricaded themselves in a Palestinian home, and attacked foreign journalists. Riots also occurred in the village of Jalud. Security forces have identified several suspects and attempted to arrest them, with law enforcement expecting arrests in the near future. Three vehicles believed to have been used by the attackers were confiscated during the incidents.
