IDF Captures Hezbollah's Strategic Tunnel Network in Southern Lebanon

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have completed the capture and clearing of a significant Hezbollah tunnel complex on the Ali-Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, which served as a key operational and logistical hub for the group's "Bader" units. The operation, which began on June 14 and concluded after several weeks, involved separating the tunnel infrastructure from the Nabatieh area. The IDF described the underground complex as a de facto Hezbollah base, containing command posts, communication facilities, and medical and logistical areas. Israeli military officials believe the loss of this facility represents a serious strategic and operational blow to Hezbollah.

The operation faced significant challenges, including a heavy engagement on the night of June 18-19 where a tank belonging to the commander of the 52nd Armored Battalion, Dor Gedalia Ben Simhon, was hit. Commander Ben Simhon, along with Sergeants Yoav Klein, Liav Gabbai, and Neve Habshush, were killed in the attack. The IDF estimates that approximately 30 militants were inside the complex at the start of the fighting, with 15 bodies of militants reportedly found within the tunnels. The remaining militants are believed to have escaped, possibly wounded.

Israeli forces utilized robotic systems for subterranean exploration, supported by special forces and armored units from the 7th Brigade. The decision to release details of the operation was strategic, according to the IDF. They believe Hezbollah attempted to leverage the situation at Ali-Taher to draw Iran into direct conflict with Israel. By publicly announcing the capture, the IDF aimed to reduce the likelihood of further Iranian involvement and curb Hezbollah's efforts to escalate the conflict.
