Iran Warns US Over Israeli Operation in Southern Lebanon; Hezbollah Seeks Iranian Escalation

Iran has reportedly warned the United States that it will respond forcefully if Israel attempts to attack the Ali Taher ridge in southern Lebanon, where Hezbollah operatives are reportedly entrenched. According to Reuters, the compound also houses at least 12 Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) members, including two senior officers. However, the Israeli military stated it is unaware of any Iranian presence on the ridge.

Israeli defense officials believe Hezbollah is attempting to draw Iran into a broader conflict with Israel. Meanwhile, the IDF continues its intense operations on the Ali Taher ridge, dismantling Hezbollah's infrastructure and underground tunnel networks. The military reports significant Hezbollah casualties within the tunnels and the escape of some militants. The operation aims to neutralize the threat and prevent any regrouping.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated that any Iranian attack against Israel would free Israel from all limitations, vowing to strike all Iranian infrastructure, including energy facilities. He suggested that economic pressure and the fear of internal unrest might push the Iranian regime towards desperate actions, but emphasized Israel's readiness for all scenarios.

The Ali Taher ridge, approximately 700 meters high, offers strategic topographical advantages, overlooking key routes. Hezbollah's "Badr" unit command was reportedly stationed there. The IDF has maintained a prolonged siege on the area, with reports of dozens of militants, possibly including IRGC elements, trapped. The ongoing operation involves careful, gradual pressure to minimize risks to soldiers operating in the fortified underground system.

The potential presence of IRGC members or Iranian advisors in the besieged area presents a complex dilemma for Israel, raising regional sensitivities and international concerns about further escalation with Tehran. The IDF maintains it has the capabilities to fully neutralize the site but awaits a directive from the political echelon to proceed.
