Iran Warns US of Strong Response if Israel Attacks Key Lebanon Site

Iran has issued a rare warning to the United States, cautioning against a significant Israeli military operation in southern Lebanon, according to a Reuters report citing three sources familiar with the matter. Tehran conveyed that if Israel launches a substantial ground operation to seize the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge, currently controlled by Hezbollah, Iran would respond forcefully. The ridge is considered a key strategic point in the region, with over a dozen Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps members, including at least two senior officers, reportedly present there.

The message was delivered to the U.S. last month, likely through Omani mediation, emphasizing that a large-scale Israeli action would trigger a significant Iranian retaliation. Following this warning and U.S. pressure, Israel has reportedly decided not to advance the option of taking control of the ridge for the time being, though a military operation remains a possibility.

The Ali al-Taher ridge holds considerable military importance. Lebanese security sources claim Hezbollah operates an underground infrastructure there, including a command center and weapons storage facilities. The IDF has identified the area as a primary operational hub and is increasing pressure on Hezbollah operatives, attempting to block food and water supplies to the compound using drones. In July, the IDF reported striking a Hezbollah operative near a tunnel entrance in the area. Hezbollah has neither confirmed nor denied the presence of Iranian Revolutionary Guard members on the ridge.

The organization stated to Reuters that any Israeli ground operation in southern Lebanon, particularly an attempt to expand territorial control, would be a severe violation of understandings reached in June. Despite Iran's warning, a Lebanese source close to the situation and a senior Lebanese security official believe Israel might still attempt to seize the ridge in the coming weeks. Hezbollah warns that such a move could lead to a dramatic escalation and a return to full-scale war, including renewed missile fire towards northern Israeli communities.
