Gabi Kanyukovsky Returns to Maccabi Tel Aviv After Successful Stint in Hungary

Gabi Kanyukovsky is returning to Maccabi Tel Aviv after a successful year playing in Hungary for Ferencváros under manager Robbie Keane. Kanyukovsky was a key player for Ferencváros, helping them win the league title in the 2024/25 season. He was a regular starter for the Hungarian club, but chose to return to Israel despite having the option to continue playing abroad.

Kanyukovsky's integration into Ferencváros was rapid, partly due to his connection with Robbie Keane, with whom he had previously won a championship in Israel. He joined the Hungarian club on a free transfer and played a central role in their attack, often described as the team's engine. In Hungary, he averaged 1.7 key passes and 5.8 ball recoveries per game, continuing his strong performance from his time at Maccabi Tel Aviv. His role in Hungary was more flexible, allowing him to play in a more advanced position, which led to him being named in the league's Team of the Season.

During the latter half of the season, Kanyukovsky's role shifted further forward, resulting in more goal-scoring opportunities. He scored five goals in Hungary compared to two for Maccabi Tel Aviv in his previous season. Kanyukovsky himself admitted he was not satisfied with his performance at the start of the season, but his numbers improved significantly in the second half as he became more involved in the attack. Robbie Keane noted Kanyukovsky's intelligence and ability to play closer to the goal, stating, "Kanyukovsky is intelligent enough to play near the goal. I used him in this role. He is such an intelligent player that he can solve things and take advantage of these opportunities."

Kanyukovsky returns to a different Maccabi Tel Aviv squad than the one he left, with key players like Eran Zahavi and Dor Turgeman no longer with the club.
