Gabi Kanyukovsky Returns to Maccabi Tel Aviv After Successful Stint Abroad

Gabi Kanyukovsky is returning to Maccabi Tel Aviv, rejoining the club after a successful season playing for Ferencváros in Hungary under coach Robbie Keane. Kanyukovsky was a key player in Maccabi Tel Aviv's championship win in the 2024/25 season before his move.

His decision to return to Israel was his own, despite having the option to continue playing abroad. Kanyukovsky integrated quickly into Ferencváros, partly due to his connection with Keane, with whom he had previously won a title in Israel. He was a free agent upon arrival and played a similar role, described as the "owner" of the attack, operating across various midfield positions and serving as the team's engine.

In Hungary, Kanyukovsky recorded 1.7 key passes and 5.8 ball recoveries per game, continuing his strong performance from Maccabi Tel Aviv. His role in Hungary was more fluid, allowing him greater freedom to advance upfield, often with two defensive midfielders alongside him. This more advanced position contributed to his selection for the season's best eleven and saw him score five goals, compared to two for Maccabi Tel Aviv in his final season there.

Keane commented on Kanyukovsky's effectiveness in a more attacking role, stating, "Kanyukovsky is intelligent enough to play close to the goal. I used him in this role. He is such an intelligent player that he can solve things and take advantage of these opportunities." Kanyukovsky himself admitted dissatisfaction with his early-season performance in Hungary, noting an improvement in the latter half as his goal-scoring and attacking involvement increased.

Kanyukovsky returns to a significantly changed Maccabi Tel Aviv squad, with key players like Eran Zahavi and Dor Turgeman no longer with the club. The team's attacking strategy may shift, potentially demanding more from midfielders. New coach Kanny Miller might utilize Kanyukovsky in a more advanced role, granting him freedom to shoot from distance and join the attack. While he may partner with Dor Peretz in midfield, Kanyukovsky's ability to manage the game and draw defenders will be crucial. His potential partnership with Roy Revivo could restore Maccabi Tel Aviv's previous form. Despite not competing in Europe, the club is considered a championship contender.
