Maccabi Tel Aviv Reassesses Gabi Kanikovski Return After European Exit

For the first time in three years, Maccabi Tel Aviv will not participate in the group stages of any European competition. The club is still recovering from its elimination from the UEFA Conference League following a 1-1 draw against Lugano on August 27, which ended 3-2 on aggregate. This outcome has raised several questions about the club's transfer plans, particularly regarding the potential return of midfielder Gabi Kanikovski.

Kanikovski's current club, Ferencváros, recently secured a 4-0 victory over Trabzonspor, advancing 5-0 on aggregate to the Europa League. However, Kanikovski did not play in that match. Ferencváros, facing financial challenges after losing key sponsors, benefited from this qualification, but Kanikovski himself is reportedly eager to return to Israel and has already agreed on terms with Maccabi Tel Aviv, which could expedite the transfer.

Regarding foreign player acquisitions, Maccabi Tel Aviv has a substantial budget of approximately 450 million shekels and over one million euros allocated for transfers. Despite this, the club has yet to finalize any signings, awaiting the release of players like Kerwin Andrade or Ion Nicolaescu. The priority is to fill the right-wing position first, with plans to address other positions, including center-back, especially after a costly mistake by Mohammed Ali Kamara in the recent match.

The club is determined to strengthen its squad despite the setback of missing out on European competition for the first time in four years, aiming to rebuild and prepare for the upcoming season with strategic signings and the possible reintegration of Kanikovski.
