Brazilian Woman Killed in Bungy Jump After Safety Cable Was Left Unattached

The story · English

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a 21-year-old from São Paulo, was identified as the young woman who died in a bungy jumping accident in Brazil. She arrived on Saturday morning at Ponte do Escalavo, known locally as the Skeleton Bridge, in the city of Limeira, a popular extreme-sports jump site in the region.

Shortly before the jump, she posted excited images on social media. In one photo beside a banner for Entre Cordas, she wrote, “Who was the crazy person who let me come jump off a bridge?” That was her final post.

Video from the scene showed two workers lifting her in a “Superman” position and throwing her off the bridge, but her safety cords had not been attached to her harness. Witnesses immediately shouted, “The rope! People, the rope!”, but it was too late. She fell about 40 meters to the ground, and firefighters and rescue crews were dispatched, though she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities in São Paulo have opened a manslaughter investigation. Six people were detained at the site, and police are now examining the operators’ responsibility and the attraction’s safety procedures. Reports said the jump was run by Entre Cordas and cost participants about 180 reais, or about 103 shekels. The death shocked Brazil, especially because it appears to have been caused by a basic safety failure rather than a technical malfunction or unforeseen accident.
