Brazilian Hiker Dies After Falling From Cliff While Taking Photos Near Rio de Janeiro
Caio Rocha Aguiar Arbel, 44, lost his life in a tragic accident earlier this week while hiking near Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Caio, part of a support team for a group of hikers in Maricá, climbed a steep rock formation at the summit of Pedra do Macaco to take photos of the panoramic city view. A video recorded by a woman in the group shows Caio standing carefully on the rock, with her warning him to be cautious moments before the accident. As he tried to turn and descend, he lost his balance and fell approximately 150 meters to his death, witnessed in horror by his friends.
Emergency and fire teams were immediately dispatched but faced significant challenges reaching the site due to dense vegetation and steep terrain. Rescue operations involved helicopters and rope systems and lasted about four hours, but Caio was found deceased upon arrival. Local sources highlight that the trail is extremely dangerous, lacking warning signs or protective railings near the cliffs, making the summit particularly hazardous, especially when attempting to take photographs.
This incident marks the second fatal accident in the area within two weeks, following the death of a 59-year-old woman who fell during a nearby rappelling activity. The Rio de Janeiro police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding Caio's fall.
