Hiker Dies After Falling 150 Meters While Taking Photo on Brazil Trail
Caio Rocha Aguiar Arbel, 44, died after falling approximately 150 meters at the Pedra do Macaco trail in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The incident occurred moments after he climbed onto a rock to take a photo, which was captured on camera. Another hiker on the trail warned Arbel as he attempted to descend, with her shouts audible in the footage.
A rescue operation lasting four hours was launched, but authorities confirmed Arbel succumbed to his injuries. Local official Mateus Moreira described the challenging rescue, noting the team had to navigate dense, forested terrain and use ropes to reach the site. Moreira also stated that Arbel was leading a group on the trail without an authorized guide and tried to descend from the wrong side of the rock before falling.
The Pedra do Macaco trail is about 800 meters long and takes roughly 40 minutes to hike. It is a popular spot for hikers to take photos overlooking the lagoons of Maricá, Rio de Janeiro state, but has a history of accidents. Authorities continue to warn visitors about the dangers of the exposed viewpoint.
