Bungee Jump Turns Fatal in Brazil After Crew Reportedly Failed to Attach Safety Rope
A weekend bungee-jumping outing in Limeira, in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, ended in tragedy when a young woman fell to her death from a bridge about 40 meters high. Local reports said she was 24, though some outlets gave her age as 21. She had come to the well-known site for what was meant to be an adrenaline experience and a lasting memory, and the incident was reportedly captured on video without her realizing she was recording her final moments.
According to Naira Fritas, an eyewitness who was there to accompany her partner on a jump, the activity cost 290 Brazilian reais, about 210 shekels, and included video footage provided by the operating company. Fritas said the woman held the camera equipment in her right hand throughout the preparations, not knowing what was about to happen. Social media videos show three staff members carrying her toward the jump platform and throwing her into the air, while the safety rope that should have been attached to her is later seen rolled up on the ground behind the instructors.
Fritas blamed the crew, saying, "It was irresponsibility by the team, they simply did not check the rope," and said it was not an accident but a complete failure of basic safety procedures. Witnesses said staff froze when they realized the mistake and even tried to flee the scene. The operating company was also reported to have quickly erased its Instagram account, which had more than 80,000 followers, before shocked customers left the bridge, and a dedicated WhatsApp group for ticket buyers was blocked from comments.
Despite attempts by bystanders to resuscitate the woman before rescue forces arrived, medical teams declared her dead from severe multiple trauma. Local police and firefighters opened an investigation, and six people, including staff members who were on the bridge, were detained for questioning. Three of them remained in custody while authorities continued collecting testimony.
