21-Year-Old Woman Dies in Brazil Bungee Jumping Accident After Crew Failed to Attach Safety Rope
A 21-year-old woman died on Saturday in Limeira, in Brazil’s São Paulo state, after falling about 40 meters during a bungee jump. According to local military police and witnesses, staff from the company operating the site forgot to secure her safety ropes before pushing her off the bridge.
Videos circulating on social media showed three men carrying her to the jump platform and throwing her down, while the safety rope was visible lying on the ground behind them. Seconds later, bystanders shouted, “The rope! People, the rope!” Only after she had already been dropped did those at the scene realize she was not tied in.
Rescue workers and emergency medical teams were called, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said six people were arrested on suspicion of involvement in the incident, and two tried to flee after understanding what had happened before being caught following a police chase.
Brazilian media reported that her boyfriend, who was present during the accident, collapsed and felt unwell, and was taken to the emergency room. The investigation has been handed to local police in Limeira, which is examining the conduct of the companies that ran the site. As of now, the two companies involved have not commented.
