Brazilian Bungee Jumping Death Triggers Criminal Probe
Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, a 21-year-old from Sao Paulo, was identified as the young woman who died in a bungee jumping accident in Brazil. She arrived on Saturday morning at Ponte do Escalvo, known locally as a popular extreme-sports jump site in Limeira, and had posted excited photos on social media shortly before the fatal incident.
In her last post, beside a sign for the company Entre Cordas, she wrote, "Who was the crazy one who let me come jump off a bridge?" A video later shared online showed two workers carrying her in a "Superman" position and throwing her from the bridge, but her safety cords had not been attached to her harness.
Witnesses shouted, "The rope! People, the rope!" but it was too late. Freitas fell about 40 meters to the ground. Fire and rescue crews were dispatched, but she was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities in Sao Paulo have opened a criminal investigation on suspicion of manslaughter. Six people were detained at the site, and police are examining the operators' responsibility and the attraction's safety procedures. Reports say Entre Cordas charged participants about 180 reais, or roughly 103 shekels, per jump.
