Defense Minister Katz Urges President Herzog to Shorten Alor Azaria’s Criminal Record Erasure Period

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Katz has formally requested President Isaac Herzog to shorten the period for erasing the criminal record of Alor Azaria, who was convicted in 2018 for a fatal shooting of a neutralized terrorist. Katz emphasized that more than a decade has passed since the incident and Azaria has served his full prison sentence, advocating only for a reduction in the record erasure timeframe now that the statutory limitation period has expired. Katz stated that granting this request would not erase the past but would uphold the principle of rehabilitation.

The request originated from Azaria himself and was submitted following standard procedures, including review by security authorities. So far, only Katz’s opinion has been received; further assessments from the IDF Chief of Staff, military prosecution, and head of the Personnel Directorate are pending. President Herzog will consider the request carefully once all evaluations are complete.

Katz highlighted Azaria’s distinguished service as a combat medic in the Kfir Brigade and noted the heavy personal, familial, and public toll he has endured. He linked the request to the broader context of Israel’s ongoing fight against Palestinian terrorism, referencing the October 7 massacre and prisoner releases in exchange for hostages, underscoring the harsh realities faced by Israeli soldiers. Katz argued that after serving his sentence, it is difficult to justify continued obstacles to Azaria’s full societal reintegration, framing the move as a deserved chance for Azaria to rebuild his life as an ordinary citizen.
