Akiva Novik Criticizes Defense Minister Israel Katz for Reviving Elor Azaria Case

Akiva Novik sharply criticized Defense Minister Israel Katz for issuing a statement about requesting the deletion of Elor Azaria's criminal record. Novik accused Katz of distracting from pressing security and legislative issues by reviving a decade-old case. He described the Azaria affair as a "look, a bird" tactic, diverting attention from current matters such as security affairs, the Basic Law on Torah Study passed recently, and legislation targeting only secular and religious draft dodgers while excluding ultra-Orthodox ones.

Novik argued that Katz is not alone in this approach, citing Education Minister Yoav Kish, who focused on resolving a non-existent issue regarding the wearing of tefillin amid widespread student underperformance. He also mentioned Culture Minister Miri Regev subsidizing peripheral travel despite known traffic congestion problems, and MKs Idith Silman and Amichai Shikli's obsession with former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

According to Novik, ministers who feel ineffective or underappreciated resort to such distractions, saying, "Look, tefillin, look, the Bible path, look, Elor Azaria." He concluded that these tactics serve to divert public and media attention from their actual ministerial shortcomings.
