Defense Minister Israel Katz Moves to Clear Elor Azaria's Criminal Record
A decade after Elor Azaria was convicted for killing a terrorist in Hebron, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz is reportedly preparing to recommend to President Isaac Herzog the deletion of Azaria's criminal record. According to a report by Channel 14 News, Katz has contacted various IDF officials to quickly gather opinions to support this recommendation, aiming to allow Azaria to resume a normal civilian life following his prison sentence served ten years ago.
This development follows Azaria's 2022 petition to President Herzog requesting the removal of his criminal record, a matter previously avoided by former defense ministers for various reasons. Recently, Katz received a detailed personal letter from Azaria outlining the significant reasons for his request, which prompted the minister to act and coordinate with military authorities.
In his letter, Azaria recounted his military service beginning in July 2014 as a combat soldier, communications operator, and sniper in the Kfir Brigade's Shimshon Battalion, where he earned a battalion excellence certificate in 2015. He described the March 24, 2016 incident in Hebron when he neutralized a terrorist who attempted to stab an Israeli soldier during a crowded Purim celebration. Azaria emphasized that although he served his prison term, the criminal record continues to hinder his civilian life, particularly his efforts to find employment.
Azaria, now married with two young children and living in central Israel, noted that he had previously requested the record's removal multiple times without response. He expressed hope that justice would soon be served: "I hope that after more than 10 years since the incident, the criminal record will finally be erased, as it unjustly shadows me and harms my family life, affecting my ability to find work or pursue studies. I sincerely hope the request will be accepted and the record erased."
