Defense Minister Requests Presidential Pardon to Expunge Elor Azaria's Criminal Record

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz submitted an official pardon request to President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday to erase the criminal record of Elor Azaria. Azaria was convicted in 2017 for killing a neutralized terrorist lying on the ground in Hebron and was sentenced to prison and demoted to private rank. Katz argued that it is unreasonable for a distinguished soldier to continue paying a heavy price a decade after the incident, especially since Azaria served his full prison term in 2018. The request seeks to shorten the period before the criminal record is expunged, as the statutory limitation period has already passed.

Katz highlighted Azaria's service as an outstanding combat medic in the Kfir Brigade and noted the complex operational circumstances of the incident. He also emphasized the personal, familial, and public toll Azaria has endured, as well as his efforts to rehabilitate, start a family, and reintegrate into the workforce. Katz further contextualized the request by referencing the deadly terror attacks of October 7, underscoring the brutal nature of Palestinian terrorism Israel faces and the moral challenges confronting IDF soldiers.

The defense minister concluded that allowing Azaria to move on with his life sends a positive message to Israeli youth serving in combat units and dangerous posts, acknowledging the harsh realities soldiers face while defending the country.
