Israeli Defense Minister Requests Official Pardon to Expunge Elor Azaria’s Criminal Record
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz formally petitioned President Isaac Herzog on Tuesday to grant a pardon to Elor Azaria, aiming to shorten the period required to erase Azaria’s criminal record. Katz noted that more than a decade has passed since the incident for which Azaria was convicted, and that Azaria completed his full prison sentence in 2018. The current request focuses solely on reducing the time needed to clear his criminal record, as the statutory limitation period has already elapsed.
Katz emphasized Azaria’s service as an outstanding combat medic in the Kfir Brigade and highlighted the complex operational circumstances surrounding the incident. He also pointed to the significant personal, familial, and public toll Azaria has endured over the years, as well as his efforts to rehabilitate, start a family, and reintegrate into the workforce.
Elor Azaria was convicted by a military court in Jaffa on April 18, 2016, for a controversial shooting during military operations. Katz’s request to President Herzog seeks to facilitate Azaria’s full social and legal rehabilitation by expediting the removal of his criminal record.
