Defense Minister Katz Requests Presidential Pardon to Expunge Elor Azaria's Criminal Record
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has formally submitted a pardon request to President Isaac Herzog seeking to erase the criminal record of Elor Azaria. In his letter, Katz argued that it is unreasonable for a distinguished soldier, convicted of an offense committed during operational service, to continue bearing a heavy penalty after a decade. Katz emphasized that maintaining the record sends a negative message to Israeli youth serving in combat and dangerous roles. He stated there is a need to allow Azaria to rehabilitate and start a new life. The letter also noted that Azaria completed his full prison sentence in 2018. Katz pointed out that the statutory limitation period under the law has already passed, and the current request is solely to shorten the period before the criminal record can be expunged.
