Israeli President Awaits Additional Opinions Before Deciding on Elor Azaria's Clemency Request

The Israeli President's Office announced it is awaiting further expert opinions before making a decision on the clemency request for Elor Azaria, a former soldier convicted of a military offense. So far, only the Defense Minister's opinion has been received, and the President will consider the request responsibly once all relevant assessments, including those from the military, are submitted.

Defense Minister Israel Katz formally requested President Isaac Herzog to grant clemency by shortening the period for erasing Azaria's criminal record. Katz emphasized that more than a decade has passed since the incident, and Azaria has already served his full prison sentence in 2018. The current request pertains solely to reducing the time before his criminal record is cleared, as the statutory limitation period has already expired.

Katz highlighted Azaria's distinguished service as a combat medic in the Kfir Brigade and noted the complex operational circumstances of the incident. He also pointed to the heavy personal, familial, and public price Azaria has paid over the years, as well as his efforts to rehabilitate, start a family, and reintegrate into civilian life. The President's Office reiterated that it will weigh all opinions carefully before reaching a decision on the clemency application.
