דובר צה"ל מסר כי מפקד חטיבת רפיח של ארגון הטרור חמאס, שחוסל לאחרונה, היה מעורב בהחזקת חיילים ואזרחים ישראלים. פרטים נוספים על נסיבות החזקתם או על תפקידו המדויק של המפקד לא פורטו.

הפרסום של דובר צה"ל מגיע על רקע המאמצים המתמשכים לאיתור והשבתם של החטופים שנלקחו לרצועת עזה במהלך מתקפת חמאס ב-7 באוקטובר. חטיבת רפיח היא אחת החטיבות המרכזיות של חמאס, והלחימה בה נמשכת במטרה לפרק את יכולותיו הצבאיות של הארגון.
