- Houthi rebels seized the port city of Al Mocha in Yemen.
- The city is located north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
- Control of the strait could disrupt Red Sea shipping.
- The move is seen as part of an Iranian strategy.
Internationally recognized Yemeni government sources informed Reuters that Iran-backed Houthi rebels have taken control of the strategic port city of Al Mocha. The city is located 74 kilometers north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway at the entrance to the Red Sea, connecting the Indian Ocean to the Suez Canal and Europe.
The Houthi seizure of the eastern bank of the strait positions them to potentially disrupt maritime traffic. This move is seen as part of a broader Iranian strategy to limit adversaries' maritime options without engaging in large-scale confrontations, while still achieving significant strategic effects.
Al Mocha was the last major populated area on the route leading to the vital strait. Its capture by the Houthis marks a significant advance for the group in controlling access to the Red Sea.
