Yemen Rebels Seize Strategic Port, Advance Towards Bab el-Mandeb Strait
Internationally recognized Yemeni government sources informed Reuters that Iran-backed Houthi rebels have taken control of the strategic port city of Al Mocha. The city is located 74 kilometers north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a critical waterway at the entrance to the Red Sea, connecting the Indian Ocean to the Suez Canal and Europe.
The Houthi seizure of the eastern bank of the strait positions them to potentially disrupt maritime traffic. This move is seen as part of a broader Iranian strategy to limit adversaries' maritime options without engaging in large-scale confrontations, while still achieving significant strategic effects.
