Houthis Expand Control Near Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Posing New Threat to Israel

The Houthi movement has significantly expanded its presence on Yemen's western coast, nearing physical control of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which Israel views as a new and escalating threat. This development moves beyond potential long-range missile attacks to direct control over a critical global maritime route, according to Maariv.

Recent reports indicate the Houthis have seized Perim Island (also known as Mayon) in the central strait and advanced to the Dhubab region on the Yemeni coast. The port city of Al Mukha also recently fell under Houthi control. The Bab el-Mandeb Strait connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden, providing access to the Indian Ocean and serving as a vital artery for global trade.

The Houthi consolidation of power raises serious concerns for international shipping and commercial navigation. Israel is closely monitoring the situation, particularly the potential for increased pressure on merchant vessels and tankers, and the possibility of restricted shipping in the Red Sea.

Israeli military officials, including Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and Navy Commander Eyal Harel, have previously emphasized Israel's readiness to counter threats from distant maritime directions. The escalating Houthi control in the Bab el-Mandeb area is prompting Israel to prepare for potential direct confrontation, following earlier reports that Prime Minister Netanyahu is preparing for a new war.
