Israeli Police Arrest 18-Year-Old for Violent Attack on Bus Driver in Modi'in

An 18-year-old suspect was arrested and remanded in custody following a violent assault on a bus driver in Modi'in last week. According to security footage from the bus, the suspect broke through the protective partition, smashed the glass, punched the driver repeatedly, and kicked him before fleeing the scene. Witnesses on the bus reportedly did not intervene or assist the driver during the attack.

Police conducted extensive investigations to identify and locate the suspect, who eventually surrendered at a police station in Bnei Brak and was transferred to Modi'in Illit for questioning. He faces charges of assaulting a public servant and causing serious bodily harm. After his interrogation, he was detained overnight.

The incident highlights a troubling rise in violence against public transportation workers in Israel. Data from the Public Transportation Drivers Organization under the National Labor Federation shows a more than 12% increase in physical assaults on bus drivers over the past month compared to the same period last year. This is the highest level of violence recorded since the organization began tracking such incidents over a decade ago.

The drivers' organization called for immediate expansion of security units across the country’s public transportation system, warning that the risk of fatal attacks on drivers is alarmingly close. They emphasized the urgent need to address the growing violence to protect drivers and passengers alike.
