18-Year-Old Suspect Detained for Violent Bus Driver Assault in Modiin Illit

An 18-year-old man was arrested and brought to court on Tuesday morning on suspicion of severely assaulting a bus driver in Modiin Illit. The incident occurred after midnight last Wednesday on a public bus traveling from Bnei Brak to Modiin Illit. The driver reported being attacked by several youths during the ride, sustaining injuries that required medical treatment. Following the report, police launched an investigation at the Modiin Illit station, collecting the driver's testimony and reviewing security footage from the bus.

According to the driver and video evidence, one of the youths broke through the protective partition separating the driver from passengers, approached the driver while seated, and began punching and kicking him. The suspect exited the bus but then returned to assault the driver again, an act the court described as a "serious assault." Witnesses were present but did not intervene or assist the driver.

During police questioning, the suspect offered a different account, claiming he felt threatened by the driver, who allegedly said "you will die tonight" and made a physical gesture toward him without touching him. Police noted the incident reflects ongoing tensions in the Modiin Illit area, particularly involving drivers of certain ethnic backgrounds.

Investigators conducted searches at the suspect's residence multiple times without locating him. The suspect surrendered himself to the Bnei Brak police station on Monday evening and was transferred for questioning in Modiin Illit. He was subsequently detained overnight and brought before the court on Tuesday, where his detention was extended by three days until Thursday to allow further investigation.
