Eyal Berkovic Questioned by Police After Driving Incident With Convicted Felon
Israeli police on Monday questioned TV host and former footballer Eyal Berkovic under caution on suspicion of reckless driving, after a widely circulated video showed him continuing to drive while Mordechai David, a convicted criminal, was clinging to his car. Berkovic, a Haifa resident in his 50s, was released with restrictions after the interview and the investigation is still ongoing.
The probe began after David and his activists posted footage on social media. In the video, David runs toward Berkovic’s vehicle while another activist on a motorcycle helps block the road. David then climbs onto the hood and shouts, “Run me over, you said you would run me over,” while continuing to film himself as Berkovic drives on.
During questioning, Berkovic gave his version of events. “Mordechai David opened the door,” he told investigators. “He shoved his phone into the car and started cursing, but it was all without violence.” He said he kept driving because he was confused and did not know how to react.
Berkovic also said, “They came at me and ambushed me. Two cars and two motorcycles. Then he jumped on the hood and I was afraid to stop because he could fall and be run over.” Police said another person involved was also summoned for questioning. Last week, David himself was also questioned under caution. The article notes that David routinely targets public figures and protesters against the government, confronts them with his activists, and publishes the recordings online.
