Israeli Foreign News Veteran Oren Nahari Dies at 70, Hundreds Attend Funeral

Oren Nahari, a leading Israeli foreign news journalist, passed away at age 70 on Thursday. His funeral is currently taking place at Menucha Nechona Cemetery in Yarkon, Petah Tikva, with hundreds of media colleagues, friends, and family attending. Nahari had revealed in March that he was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), and his condition had recently worsened. He broadcasted his final radio program last Saturday, urging listeners to continue questioning and engaging with the world.

The funeral began with a moment of silence followed by a performance from Ensemble Coral, a musical group Nahari loved for 13 years. His own farewell words, written before his death, were read aloud, reflecting on his unexpected illness and his life plans, including traveling and spending time with family. He expressed gratitude for his career, friendships, and experiences, and shared heartfelt messages to his wife Vered, children, stepchildren, sister, and close friends.

Vered Nahari, his wife of nearly 20 years, delivered a moving eulogy, describing Oren as a wonderful partner, father, and grandfather. She spoke about their shared life, the pain of his illness, and their hopes that were cut short. Former broadcaster and filmmaker Yarin Kimor recalled Nahari’s exceptional investigative skills and friendship, highlighting his courage and humor even in the face of death.

Vered’s son Din also paid tribute, describing Nahari as family and recalling their close bond over many years. The funeral reflected the deep respect and affection held for Nahari within Israel’s media community and his loved ones, marking the loss of a prominent figure in Israeli journalism.
