Rescue Teams Urge Caution After Teen Drowns in Jordan River Incident

A 16-year-old boy tragically drowned in the Jordan River, prompting rescue teams and commentators to stress the importance of matching trip difficulty to the weakest participant. Dotan Rokhman from the Golan Rescue Unit described the incident, explaining that the boy was moving upstream when his boat overturned, leading to a rescue operation involving multiple units including fire and police forces. After about 20 minutes of searching, the boy was found at the riverbed.

Rokhman noted that during the summer vacation period, rescue teams face numerous emergencies as many people are outdoors hiking and swimming. Israel Cohen from "Kol Barama" radio highlighted that many victims during this season come from the ultra-Orthodox community, where awareness campaigns led by rabbis have been ongoing for the past three years to promote safety and hydration during trips.

Cohen plans to dedicate part of his radio show to discussing these dangers, emphasizing the need to hike only on designated paths and carry water. He also pointed out that even rescue personnel never enter the water alone, always working in pairs to ensure safety. Despite the river’s calm appearance, it remains hazardous, and a momentary lapse in attention can lead to tragedy.

The incident underscores the ongoing risks in natural recreational areas during peak vacation times and the critical need for proper safety measures tailored to all participants’ abilities.
