Two Teenage Girls Found Dead After Jordan River Accident in Northern Israel
A tragic search operation along the Jordan River ended with the discovery of two teenage girls, Iman Khir, 13, and Hala Azzam, 14, found dead about two hours apart. The incident occurred near the village of Abu Snan in the Galilee, where the families are now mourning the sudden loss. The girls had gone for a family outing that included cherry picking in the Golan Heights and planned to barbecue, but after being asked to leave two locations near the river, they moved to another spot by the Jordan River. According to Iman's older brother, Piras Khir, who served in the Golani Brigade, the girls had not yet started their planned activities when one slipped into the water, and the others possibly tried to help her, though the exact circumstances remain unclear pending official investigations.
Piras described his sister as the "light of the house," a smart and beloved child with whom he shared a close bond despite a ten-year age gap. He expressed the profound pain of losing a sibling, contrasting it with the loss of friends he experienced during his military service. Meanwhile, Hala's family is equally devastated. Her uncle, Maher Abu Assi, said the family is struggling to comprehend the tragedy and described Hala as a joyful, helpful girl who was deeply committed to her religious studies at a school in Yirka. The three girls were inseparable friends and cousins who spent the day together, which was meant to be filled with fun and laughter.
The families are awaiting the results of police and rescue forces' investigations to understand the exact sequence of events. Community support has been strong, with many locals, teachers, and friends rallying around the grieving families. However, as Maher noted, no support can truly fill the void left by the loss of two young lives that began the day with joy and ended in tragedy.
