Right-Wing Activist Yoav Eliasi Faces Police Hearing Over Misconduct Allegations

Yoav Eliasi, a right-wing activist and commander of a rapid response unit in Tel Aviv, was summoned for a police hearing on Wednesday following an investigation by the Police Investigations Department (Mahash) into allegations of breach of trust. Earlier the same day, Eliasi was questioned under caution alongside three police officers, including an intelligence coordinator, suspected of providing police favors to a nightclub owned by Eliasi's brother. All four were released under restrictive conditions, with the officers suspended from police facilities for three days and Eliasi for one week.

The police commissioner, Danni Levi, had already suspended Eliasi last week after an investigative report by Haaretz revealed that Eliasi leveraged his police connections to secure leniency for the nightclub on Rothschild Street in Tel Aviv, where he was also involved in business. The report included recordings in which Eliasi boasted about his influence over police enforcement, including preventing the club's closure following violent incidents.

Eliasi's lawyer, Ariel Atri, stated that Eliasi cooperated fully with Mahash investigators and denied ever exploiting police connections for the nightclub's benefit. He described Eliasi's previous remarks as private boasting with a close friend, not reflective of actual misconduct. The outcome of the hearing will determine whether Eliasi will continue in his role as commander of the Tel Aviv rapid response unit.
