Right-Wing Activist Yoav Eliasi Faces Police Hearing Over Misconduct Allegations

Yoav Eliasi, a right-wing activist and commander of a police rapid response unit in Tel Aviv, was summoned for a police hearing on Wednesday following an investigation by the Police Investigations Department (Mahash) into allegations of misconduct. The hearing, scheduled for Thursday, will determine whether Eliasi will be removed from his police role. Earlier on Wednesday, Eliasi and three police officers, including an intelligence coordinator, were questioned under caution on suspicion of breach of trust related to providing police favors to a nightclub owned by Eliasi's brother. All four were released under restrictive conditions; the officers were suspended from police facilities for three days, while Eliasi was barred for a week.

The police commissioner, Dany Levi, had already suspended Eliasi last week after an investigative report by Haaretz revealed that Eliasi used his police connections to secure leniency for the nightclub on Rothschild Street in Tel Aviv, where he also had business involvement. The report included recordings in which Eliasi boasted about his influence over police enforcement, claiming he "educated" the police that the club could not be touched and that any police-related issues concerning the club should be directed to him immediately.

Eliasi's attorney, Ariel Atri, stated that Eliasi cooperated fully with investigators, denying any receipt of benefits and explaining that his statements were typical private boasting. He emphasized that Eliasi acted as a private individual, separate from his volunteer police role and recognition as an outstanding officer. The case highlights concerns about potential misuse of police authority to benefit private business interests linked to a police officer.
