Trump Cancels Planned Strikes on Iran After Diplomatic Breakthrough on Strait of Hormuz

The United States, under President Donald Trump, has called off a planned extensive military strike against Iran following intense behind-the-scenes diplomatic efforts. The decision came after Iran conveyed a positive response to a proposed framework aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing regional tensions. According to reports, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed to a compromise proposal mediated by the US and Qatar, which played a key role in Trump's decision to halt the military operation.

The proposal involves reorganizing maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz by designating separate shipping lanes: inbound vessels would navigate along the Iranian side, while outbound ships would use a route in Omani waters. Oman has given preliminary approval but seeks confirmation that all Iranian power centers, especially the Revolutionary Guards who control the strait, endorse and will comply with the agreement. Qatari mediators continue to negotiate with Iranian officials to secure this commitment.

Saudi Arabia also influenced Trump’s decision, with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman warning of the risks of a broad conflict spreading across the region. Trump emphasized that the full and immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is a central condition for advancing diplomatic efforts, alongside progress on Iran’s nuclear program. Although the strike was canceled, the White House did not rule out future military action, stressing that the decision depends on quickly finalizing a comprehensive agreement. Trump concluded by affirming coordination with Israel and urging all parties to finalize the deal promptly.
