Iran Agrees to Strait of Hormuz Deal That Led Trump to Cancel Military Strike

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi agreed overnight to a compromise proposal brokered by Qatar and the United States to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, according to two diplomats familiar with the negotiations. This agreement was a key factor in President Donald Trump’s decision to cancel planned military strikes against Iran. Under the deal, ships entering the Gulf would pass through Iranian territorial waters, while exits would be through Omani waters. Oman has also agreed but requested clarification that Araghchi’s consent reflects the position of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Qatari mediators continue talks with Iran to ensure IRGC support for the arrangement.

The announcement followed a weekend of heightened tensions, during which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman expressed concerns to Trump over plans for a large-scale attack on Iran. Trump ultimately called off the strikes, emphasizing that the U.S. remains prepared to act if necessary. He stated that the cancellation was made for the sake of global stability and Iran’s survival but stressed that the move depends on swift progress toward a final agreement.

Trump’s statement also highlighted a commitment by the U.S. and Israel to the ongoing diplomatic process and urged all parties involved to work decisively to resolve the crisis. The agreement includes immediate, full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and steps to end Iran’s nuclear threat, aiming to reduce regional tensions significantly.
