IDF Kills Hamas Deputy Commander Who Held Israeli Hostages Including Romi Gonen

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the killing of Abed Youssef Kardi, deputy head of a Hamas military cell, who also served as a doctor at Shifa Hospital in Gaza. Kardi was responsible for holding Israeli hostages Romi Gonen and Sergeant Noa Marziano. The operation took place following the October 7 massacre, during which Kardi infiltrated Israeli territory and subsequently detained the hostages in Gaza.

Romi Gonen, who survived captivity, expressed relief and sorrow, stating, "This terrorist is now in hell and I am alive." She recounted the trauma she endured, including multiple instances of harassment during her 471 days in captivity. Gonen described one particularly harrowing incident where Kardi forced her to wash herself while he remained indifferent to her suffering.

Noa Marziano’s mother, Adi Marziano, shared her grief and gratitude toward Israeli security forces. She emphasized that no action can restore her daughter’s life or smile but acknowledged the killing of Kardi as a form of justice. She urged people to remember Noa not only for the tragedy but for her vibrant life and spirit, recalling Noa’s motto: "Smile as if there is no tomorrow."

The IDF and Shin Bet confirmed that Kardi was involved in the hostage-taking and the murder of Marziano, holding her body until it was recovered by Israeli forces. The operation marks a significant step in Israel’s ongoing efforts to bring justice and protect its citizens amid the conflict with Hamas.
