IDF and Shin Bet Kill Hamas Deputy Cell Leader Involved in Holding Israeli Hostages in Gaza
Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and the Shin Bet intelligence agency eliminated Abd al-Rahim Abd al-Hai Yusuf Kardi, a deputy cell leader in Hamas's military wing, in the Gaza City area on July 31, 2026. Kardi simultaneously worked as a doctor at Shifa Hospital in Gaza. He was directly involved in holding Israeli hostages, including Romi Gonen and the late Corporal Noa Marziano. Kardi held Marziano's body after her killing until it was recovered by Israeli forces. He also held Gonen in the Gaza Brigade area and at Shifa Hospital during the early stages of the conflict.
Kardi infiltrated Israeli territory during the October 7 massacre and continued to orchestrate terrorist activities against Israeli military and civilian targets throughout the war, intensifying recently. Due to the threat he posed, he was targeted and killed in an aerial strike. The IDF Southern Command remains deployed in the area under the existing agreement and stated it will continue operations to neutralize all threats. This operation underscores ongoing Israeli efforts to dismantle Hamas terror infrastructure in Gaza.
