Suspect Confesses to Killing Rabbi Amos Guetta in Netanya

A month after the murder of Rabbi Amos Guetta, 75, in Netanya, a major development occurred in the investigation. The 36-year-old suspect confessed to the Sharon District Police during interrogation, reportedly stating, "He is a false messiah." Following this admission, the Central District Prosecutor's Office is expected to file an indictment against him for murder under aggravating circumstances.

The suspect initially tried to mislead investigators by pretending to be mute and remaining silent. However, during a police interrogation tactic, he spoke after requesting a cola instead of water. Confronted with evidence, he admitted to the killing and explained his motive with the phrase, "He is a false messiah."

On July 1 at 05:44, police received a report of Rabbi Guetta being stabbed at his home in Netanya. Emergency teams arrived quickly, but the rabbi was pronounced dead at Laniado Hospital. The suspect had gained entry under the pretense of prayer, then stabbed the rabbi four times while he was in bed. The rabbi's assistant was lightly injured trying to intervene. The suspect fled but was soon captured after a rapid manhunt by Netanya police and Sharon District detectives. The murder weapon was recovered at the scene.

Initially, investigators considered the suspect might be mentally unstable. However, after a psychiatric evaluation, he was deemed fit to stand trial. Rabbi Guetta's murder shocked his community, especially among the Libyan and baal teshuva circles who regarded him as a spiritual leader. With the investigation concluded and the suspect's confession secured, the case will now proceed to court with the indictment expected imminently.
