Multiple Israeli Cities Open Public Shelters Amid Heightened Security Concerns

Following an increased perceived risk of missile attacks from Iran over the weekend, several Israeli municipalities have proactively opened their public bomb shelters despite no official change in Home Front Command guidelines. The initiative began with Ramat Gan's Mayor Carmel Shama-Hacohen, who decided to open all public shelters after a city assessment indicated elevated threat levels. He emphasized that this was a precautionary measure without any directive change from the Home Front Command.

Subsequently, other cities including Herzliya, Karmiel, and Eilat followed suit. Herzliya's Mayor Yariv Fisher held a situation assessment with security and emergency services, confirming that all shelters had already been open and remain so. The city invests in shelter maintenance and urges residents to keep them clean and functional, maintaining close coordination with security agencies.

Karmiel's Mayor Moshe Kuninsky reiterated that there is no new alert or change in official instructions, describing the shelter openings as routine preparedness. Residents were advised to ensure their protected spaces at home are accessible and to update emergency kits and relevant apps. Kuninsky called for calm and adherence to official guidelines.

In Eilat, Mayor Eli Lankri ordered all public shelters opened as a precaution, with emergency and enforcement units conducting frequent inspections. Shelter operators were instructed to be ready for immediate activation upon any alert. The city highlighted its comprehensive defense capabilities and ongoing coordination between municipal leadership and security forces.

All municipalities stressed that these steps are precautionary and not in response to any specific incident, urging residents to remain vigilant but continue normal routines while following official instructions.
