Near Hijacking Averted on Flydubai Flight to Israel

A potential mass casualty event was narrowly avoided when a Flydubai flight en route to Israel experienced a severe mid-air crisis, culminating in an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. The drama unfolded on flight FZ1073, a Boeing 737 carrying 174 passengers, including 22 children, most of whom were Israeli.

At approximately 8:22 AM, the aircraft suddenly and without warning plunged 4,300 meters in just 29 seconds, causing panic among passengers. The situation escalated dramatically when the Omani pilot reportedly attacked the Indian co-pilot, stabbing him in an apparent attempt to crash the plane near the Jordanian border. A passenger seated near the cockpit witnessed the stabbing and alerted others.

Several Israeli passengers intervened, rushing to the cockpit and engaging in a physical struggle with the assailant pilot. They managed to subdue and restrain him using a pair of headphones. Coincidentally, an additional crew of pilots, possibly in training, were aboard and took control of the aircraft. Distress signals were then activated, first a general emergency code (7700) and later a code indicating hostile action or hijacking (7500).

As the plane deviated from its course, heading towards Yemen, Israeli authorities went on high alert, convening emergency discussions about how to respond to an aircraft with nearly 180 Israelis on board whose destination was unknown. For nearly 30 minutes, communication was lost, and Israel began considering closing its airspace.

At 9:38 AM, contact was re-established. The aircraft was cleared to land at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it touched down safely. Passengers expressed immense relief at returning home unharmed after the harrowing ordeal.
