Flydubai Jet Plunges Amid Pilot Brawl, Sparks Security Scare

A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv experienced a dramatic mid-air incident on September 30th, causing alarm in Israel due to fears of a hijacking. Flight FZ1073, carrying 174 passengers including 27 children, descended rapidly from approximately 34,000 feet to 14,000 feet, with momentary descent rates recorded at nearly 31,000 feet per minute. The aircraft also transmitted emergency codes, first a general emergency code (7700) and then a hijacking code (7500), while deviating from its flight path over Jordan and returning towards Saudi Arabian airspace.

The situation prompted an urgent security consultation in Israel involving Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi, with fighter jets scrambled as a precaution. However, security officials soon provided reassurance, announcing the plane would land safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Flydubai later confirmed the distress signals were triggered by an act of violence aboard the aircraft, specifically a violent altercation between the pilots. Passengers reported seeing "amounts of blood in the cockpit," suggesting a stabbing incident. The airline has launched an investigation and is arranging for a replacement aircraft to fly the passengers from Saudi Arabia to Israel.

The incident unfolded over several tense hours. After transmitting the emergency codes, the plane circled over Saudi Arabia at a lower altitude before heading towards Tabuk. While the hijacking suspicion lessened as the situation became clearer, Israeli security agencies continued to investigate, not ruling out a deliberate attempt to crash the plane, with the other pilot and possibly passengers intervening. The aircraft landed safely in Tabuk around 9:45 AM, bringing an end to the immediate crisis.
