UK Significantly Expands Arms Export Restrictions on Israel

The United Kingdom has dramatically increased restrictions on arms exports to Israel, suspending or rejecting approximately 80 defense export licenses over the past two years. This move is part of a broader effort by the British government to tighten controls on military equipment, driven by concerns that such items could be used in the conflict in Gaza and potentially violate international humanitarian law. The number of suspended licenses has nearly tripled, rising from about 30 in September 2024 to over 80 currently, according to a report in the Jewish Chronicle.

Despite these increased restrictions, recent investigations by Declassified UK suggest that critical components, including parts for the international F-35 project and training aircraft, continue to reach Israel through global supply chains. This situation has drawn sharp criticism from human rights organizations and British lawmakers who are advocating for a complete arms embargo on Israel.

These developments follow earlier announcements by the UK Parliament regarding a ban on imports from West Bank settlements and other measures against those involved in their expansion. Eleven other countries, including France and Canada, have also issued a joint statement expressing potential trade restrictions due to settlement tenders in the E1 area and increased violence in the West Bank.

In response to these international pressures, Israel announced retaliatory measures, including the closure of the British consulate in Jerusalem. Additionally, France has stated that Israel will be barred from official participation in an arms exhibition in Paris. Separately, British authorities are reportedly investigating a plot by suspects to detonate a car bomb at a military base.
