Montreal police issued an emergency alert on Monday after an ongoing shooting in the Côte-des-Neiges district, near Trans Island Boulevard and De Courtrai. Officers were dispatched in the afternoon and launched a large operation to stop the gunman. Police said one officer was wounded during the response, but gave no further details about the officer’s condition.
Police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said, "the situation is still not under control," and urged the public to stay away from the area. Residents were also told to remain inside their homes and keep away from windows after the force declared an active shooter situation.
Initial reports suggested the attack may have been directed at Jews, and the shooting site was reported to be close to a Chabad House. However, authorities have not yet officially confirmed a hate-motivated attack. Quebec Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière said the police operation was still ongoing.
The investigation is continuing, and police said more details are expected later.
