A deadly shooting in Montréal on Tuesday night, reported by CBC and CTV and covered by CNN, left a local police officer and a Jewish-Canadian civilian dead. Canadian media said the gunman, who was later killed by police, left behind a hate-filled manifesto of more than 100 pages focused largely on misogyny and a call for violent revolution.
According to the reports, investigators believe the attacker was connected to incel culture, which glorifies hatred of women. The document, now being reviewed by police, includes anti-women messages, arguments about masculinity, and criticism of women’s freedom. CTV said the manifesto also singled out the pornography industry, listing targets such as major industry conventions, company headquarters, and prominent performers or executives. The shooting took place near the offices of Aylo, a pornography company, though it is not yet clear whether that location was deliberately chosen. Aylo said it is cooperating with the investigation.
CNN reported that police believe the intended target was law enforcement rather than the Jewish community, even though the attack happened in a largely Jewish area near Jewish institutions. A law-enforcement source told CNN, “It looks like an ambush.” The gunman fired in at least two volleys and was wearing camouflage and military-style gear in footage from the scene. Police killed him after he fired more than 20 bullets.
The Jewish-Canadian civilian killed was identified as Michael Moses Mזרחי, and ZAKA said it is working to bring his body to burial in Israel. Volunteer Moishi Blech, who was at the scene, said he spent hours with the victim’s son trying to learn what had happened before receiving official confirmation that the father had been killed. The other person killed was 34-year-old officer Mohamed Lamine Bernadouane, who had served on the force since 2021; police described his death as a major loss. Another policewoman was wounded.
