A shooting erupted in Montreal’s Westbury neighborhood in Canada, near a local Chabad center and a kosher restaurant, and authorities initially treated it as a possible terror attack. Early reports said two people were killed, apparently a police officer and an assailant, while later accounts said two police officers were wounded and one suspect may have been shot dead. The incident began around 12:30 p.m. local time and remained active as police cordoned off the area.
The shooting took place in Côte-des-Neiges, a district with a large Jewish community. Residents were ordered to stay indoors, lock their doors, keep away from windows, and follow instructions from local authorities. Police deployed in large numbers and closed off the entire area as they responded to the scene.
ZAKA volunteers from its international unit said they were in contact with emergency services and local authorities and were monitoring developments. Moishi Blech, a ZAKA volunteer near the scene, said, “According to the information received so far, there is a report of hostages at the scene. Police forces are deployed in large numbers and have closed the entire area. At this stage there are reports of two suspects who have not yet been apprehended and are roaming in the area. We ask the public to follow the instructions of the security forces and avoid coming to the area.”
