A shooting in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges district on Monday night left one civilian and one police officer dead, and another officer seriously wounded, Canadian media reported. Police said the gunman was killed at the scene. The attack took place near a supermarket, a kosher restaurant and a Chabad House in a neighborhood with a large Jewish population, but the motive was not immediately known.
Authorities said the shooting began around 11:30 a.m. local time, prompting an emergency alert warning residents about an “armed and dangerous suspect.” People in the area were told to shelter inside, lock doors, stay away from windows and follow local authorities’ instructions. The same warning was broadcast on local radio and television. Police were sent in after reports of gunfire and a rifle barrel seen through a window, and officials later said the immediate threat had been neutralized and the alert was lifted.
Montreal police chief Fady Dagher said at a press conference that the suspect’s motive remained unclear. Earlier, police spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant said the situation was “not under control.” Video from the scene showed armed officers storming a local Supermarché PA branch, an injured officer on the ground, and a man believed to be the shooter nearby, wearing military-style clothing.
There was also confusion over the identity of the civilian victim. Montreal’s Jewish community first said he was Michael Moshe Mizrahi, but later corrected itself, saying he had been seriously wounded, was alive and hospitalized. Chabad emissary Rabbi Chaim Shlomo Cohen said people from nearby hotels were evacuated to the Chabad House, where about 100 people, including volunteers, were sheltering. An eyewitness told CTV there were “10 or 12 shots in a row,” with parents and children fleeing in panic. The incident drew added attention because Canada is hosting the World Cup with the United States and Mexico.
