NBA Star Deni Avdija Honored as Persian Leopard Named After Him
A young Persian leopard, recently arrived from Sweden, has been named Deni in honor of Israeli NBA player Deni Avdija at the Ramat Gan Safari. The leopard, born in June 2024, is part of a European breeding program aimed at conserving the endangered Persian leopard species.
The safari hopes the leopard, Deni, will eventually be introduced to Noa, the safari's resident female Persian leopard, with the goal of successful breeding and contributing to the species' survival.
"We chose to name him after Deni Avdija because he represents excellence, perseverance, hard work, and success in our eyes," said Hila Feldman Gra, the safari's spokesperson. "We hope our Deni will also contribute to the success of the breeding program and the conservation of this rare species."
Avdija expressed his excitement about the gesture, stating, "It's not every day a leopard is named after you. It's a great honor and a gesture that truly moved me. Thank you to the safari, and I'm already looking forward to meeting Deni the leopard."
The young leopard is currently being given a few days to acclimate to his new surroundings. The introduction process with Noa will commence later, at a pace that suits both leopards.
